Sessions will be on 5 consecutive Thursdays, 7-8pm ET / 6-7pm CT - September 7, 14, 21, 28, and October 5. Sessions will be held via Zoom.
The ELCA is developing a social statement on Civic Life and Faith, the relationship of church and state and related matters, as called for by the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly.
Social statements are the ELCA’s primary documents to address significant social issues. They are intended to aid reflection and shape conscience and to set forth the ELCA’s teaching and policy on the major social issues and questions of contemporary life.
An ELCA task force provides primary leadership for the statement’s development over a five-year period, using an established process of study and widespread participation in theological and moral deliberation. The task force is offering a study curriculum for use throughout the church. This curriculum invites participants to delve into the nature of politics, the meaning of the Scriptures, the purpose of government, the responsibility of congregations and church-related organizations, First Amendment Issues, the relationship of faith based living and civic life, connections between worship life and serving neighbor in society, the nature of citizenship, and other relevant topics.
Your participation in this work matters. Please join the Synod for this 5 week study as we discuss some difficult and weighty topics and provide feedback to the Task Force regarding the Civic Life and Faith social statement.
