The 46th Anniversary of the Assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

April 23, 2014

Louis Tillman, Christ the Lord Lutheran, Lawrenceville, GA, is a Masters of Divinity student at Lutheran Theological Seminary at Chicago.  The following is an excerpt from a letter sent to Bishop H. Julian Gordy. The World Student Christian Federation of North America recently had their SCM-USA National Leadership Training Program (LTP). The SCM-USA National Leadership Training Program was held on April 3-6, 2014 at the 4H Conference Center in Chevy Chase, MD near Washington, D.C. This gathering was an opportunity for students, young adults, senior friends and partners at large to engage in conversations around movement building locally and nationally, to discuss glo-cal activism, and to reflect theologically upon the Christian faith and how it informs social and political engagement within the context of global grassroots organizing and movement building. This ecumenical event focused primarily on building up a more sustainable, stronger and firmly established SCM locally and nationally and provide participants with concrete skills and tools to do so. There were a total of 14 different countries represented. I wanted to send you this message because of our great and prophetic leader the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I was in DC this weekend at the National Leadership Training Program facilitating workshops on Racial Justice Ministries and Mass Incarceration: Ending the School to Prison Pipeline. This was a phenomenal opportunity! As this workshop was going on the Mayor of DC, Vince Gray, had a commemoration service for the 46th year anniversary of MLK, Jr's assassination and we engaged on this. Then we all engaged on the Candle Lit Vigil as we marched for justice at his Monument. This was truly a moment of affirmation and call to my leadership as a young adult in the church and in the community. It felt great doing racial justice advocacy for the church and the society at the monument on that day!Lastly, I was the only ELCA Lutheran at this conference, but my hopes and goals are to bring at least 3 ELCA Young Adults to this conference for next year. I feel that it will be great to have ELCA involved in the SCM-USA and or the WSCF-NA. I will be the WSCF-NA representative for North America at the World Student Christian Federation's General Assembly this August in Bogota, Colombia. It is a privilege and an honor to serve as a leader for ELCA in this ecumenical capacity. Please keep me in prayer as I embark upon this journey.I wanted to share this with you. http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Vigil-Marks-Anniversary-of-Martin-Luther-Kings-Assassination-253871431.htmlI look forward to sharing ,more about this experience with you in the future.
