The next ELCA Churchwide Assembly (CWA) will be held August 5-10, 2019 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but synods will be electing their voting members at this year’s synod assemblies. In the Southeastern Synod, this process has already started, with the synod’s Nominating Committee now actively seeking potential nominees for 10 open positions. The Committee invites you to prayerfully consider making yourself available for potential nomination to fill one of these positions.
To be considered for one of the voting member positions, biographical forms must be submitted by Tuesday, April 17, 2018. We will have a total of 12 voting members – two of the 12 are automatically allocated to the synod bishop and vice president. The other 10 will be elected at the 2018 Southeastern Synod Assembly and are designated as follows:
3 Clergy (at least 1 male and 1 female)
1 Lay male person of color or primary language other than English
1 Lay female person of color or primary language other than English
1 Youth (under age 18 at the time of election)
1 Young adult lay person (ages 18-30 at the time of election)
3 Additional lay persons (at least 1 male and 1 female)
Not everyone is familiar with the role of churchwide assemblies. In general, the CWA is the primary decision-making body for the ELCA and has been described as a process of communal spiritual discernment. It is held once every three years. In 2019, voting members will elect an ELCA Presiding Bishop and a Secretary, as well as consider a proposed Social Statement on Women and Justice. Additional details about the responsibilities of churchwide assembly voting members are available here.
Questions about the CWA nominating process may be directed to the Nominating Committee Chairperson, Ms. Elaine Schwartz at email@example.com.
