ATLANTA TELUGU MISSION

7/1/2020

Our highlighted ministry for July – September 2020 is the Atlanta Telugu Mission located at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Peachtree Corners, Georgia. This ministry to first-generation Telugu speaking immigrants from southeast India is a Synod Authorized Worshipping Community. The first Telugu Worship Service was held in September 2012.

The Rev John R Billa serves as the Mission Developer for this outreach ministry. His wife Sudha leads Women’s ministry and Sunday school ministry. Jason, their 13 years old son, plays guitar and helps with music during worship.

In the early days of the Mission, most members of the Telugu congregation worshipped in their native language. The goal of the Telugu Ministry has been and continues to be an outreach to people of other faiths, especially Hindu.

Over the past seven years, however, the landscape of the Telugu-speaking immigrant community in Atlanta has changed as more people move to the US in search of jobs. Today’s membership in the Telugu Mission is now comprised of people from many other faiths who join the church through Christian Baptism.

The Telugu Mission gathers on Sunday afternoons for a weekly worship service and Sunday School for children. Also, the Telugu Mission offers a midweek Bible Study, a Women’s weekly Bible Study, Monthly Fasting Intercessory Prayers, Lenten Meditations, and counseling sessions for teens and young adults. Members of the Mission also participate in 8-9 yearly local festivals and celebrations honoring traditional Indian National Holidays. These events provide opportunities to reach out to non-Christians and unchurched Indians.

Partners in Celebration donations will be used to meet the necessary expenses to organize these events. The Mission is trying to raise $7,000 by Advent 2020 to fund these outreach efforts. Some funds will also be used to provide limited financial help for those who have been impacted by the COVID-19 virus resulting in job loss, pay cuts, and furloughs. Donations are gratefully appreciated amidst Coronavirus hardships that impacted this church, leaving its members jobless, with salary cuts and furloughs.

This emerging ministry also provides support, encouragement, and advocacy for new immigrants who struggle with language and other life issues related to the challenges of resettlement.

Your partnership and generous donations will enable the Telugu Lutheran Mission with their efforts to help share the good news with first and second-generation immigrants.
