The Assistant to the Bishop for Disaster Ministry will help develop the partnerships, resources and capacity to respond to disasters throughout the synod and help interface with the ELCA and other organizations.
Pastor Morgan Gordy has been active in disaster ministry since Hurricane George in 1998. She has served on community disaster interfaith task forces, statewide VOADS, long term recovery organizations as well as social ministry boards addressing disaster preparedness and response within our synod. In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Pastor Gordy served as Assistant to the Bishop for Gulf Coast Disaster Coordination. For many years, the development of disaster leaders throughout the synod has been a focus for her ministry. She has conducted numerous trainings for congregations, disaster response volunteers, and has taught a clinical component in disaster nursing at the University of South Alabama. She is currently assisting with the development of emotional spiritual care resources for LDR.
From 2006-2017, Pr. Gordy served as chair of the Synod Disaster Task Force / Disaster Ministry Committee and has continued to serve as staff support to the committee providing post disaster assessment and response planning and grant-writing assistance. Prior to her involvement in disaster ministry, Pastor Gordy helped form and served as first chair of the Health Ministry Task Force in the Synod, leading workshops across the synod in congregational health ministry.
Pastor Gordy was consecrated and served as Diaconal Minister [Deacon] in 1999 and was ordained to Word and Sacrament ministry in 2007. She has a background in nursing with a Masters in Community Mental Health Nursing, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Community Health Nursing. She earned a D.Min. in Pastoral Counseling and a certificate in Spiritual Direction in 1999 and FEMA Disaster Chaplaincy Training in 2015.
In addition to her work with disaster response, Pastor Gordy is grateful to have served three congregations in the Southeastern Synod: Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Ocean Springs, MS; Faith Lutheran Church in Lebanon, TN; and Christ Lutheran Church in Nashville, TN. She is married to Bishop Emeritus, Julian Gordy and lives in Franklin, TN. They have four children and seven grandchildren.
