Sharing God’s love and grace with youth and equipping adults who work with teens are Rachel’s great passions! Making sure that every person realizes that they are a beloved child of God, created with gifts to be shared with others, just as God intended, is very important to her. She understands the joys and difficulties that the teenage and young adult years bring and tries to affirm those with whom she engages.
Before joining the Southeastern Synod staff in April of 2004, she served at Apostles Lutheran Church, St. Thomas Lutheran Church, and Christ the King Lutheran Church as their youth directors. Rachel has over 30 years’ experience working in youth ministry. She remembers when she used to snail mail calendars and forms to families and make phone calls. Today, she posts on websites, texts, emails and uses social media to communicate.
Rachel serves as an Assistant to the Bishop for Young Adult and Youth Ministries. She works with SESLYO, Southeastern Synod Lutheran Youth Organization, as the synod adult adviser. She is the Director of Affirm, our summer Discipleship and Leadership Camp for 6th-12th graders and she works with the planning teams of the All-State Youth Events. Campus Ministries, Global Mission, and Boundary Training for Congregations and Rostered Leaders are also part of her synod portfolio. She travels all four states of the synod leading training in our congregations and serves at other special events on behalf of the Synod and the Bishop.
Rachel is a member of the ELCA Network for Children, Youth, and Family Ministry. She serves on the SYMBOL Board (Synod Youth Ministry Band of Leaders), and is an adult adviser for the ELCA National Youth Leadership Core Team. She is also the Synod’s Gathering Coordinator. Most recently she was a guest speaker at the ELCA Youth Leadership Summit.
Rachel grew up in Social Circle, Georgia, lived in Marietta, Georgia for over 20 years before moving to Kingsland, Georgia 10 years ago. She is married to Alex and has two young adult children, Maggie and Alex. She attended Georgia Southern University and the University of Georgia where she studied Early Childhood Education. In her free time, Rachel loves hanging out with her family, antiquing, and walking on the beach.
